Dedicated to the Empress Maria Theresa, Beethoven’s magnificent Op. 20 Septet epitomises the eighteenth-century Classical serenade and divertimento tradition, and was premiered alongside his First Symphony in 1800. Its consistent popularity and numerous transcriptions worried the young composer as he felt this work overshadowed some of his other masterpieces but it arguably remains the finest septet in history.
